What is a normal puppy growth chart by age?
The American Kennel Club publishes a chart of the share of adult weight a puppy has usually reached at each age, by size group. All of its numbers are approximate.
| Age | Small0 to 20 lb as an adult | Medium21 to 50 lb as an adult | Large51 to 100 lb as an adult | Extra-largeover 100 lb as an adult |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months | 75% | 66% | 60% | 50% |
| 9 months | 90% | 85% | 75% | 65% |
| 12 months | 100% | 95% | 85% | 80% |
| 15 months | 100% | 100% | 95% | 90% |
| 18 months | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% |
How are the size groups defined?
The AKC groups puppies by expected adult weight: small (0 to 20 lb), medium (21 to 50 lb), large (51 to 100 lb), extra-large (over 100 lb).
How do I use the chart?
Find your puppy’s size group and age, then divide its weight by the percentage. Worked example, calculated by us: a medium-size puppy that weighs 20 pounds at 6 months is at about 66 percent of adult weight, so 20 ÷ 0.66 is roughly 30 pounds. The adult weight estimator does this for you, and the calculator above works the other way, from expected adult weight to expected weight by age.
What if my puppy is above or below the chart?
Individual dogs vary, and the AKC says its numbers are approximate. If you are worried about your puppy’s weight or growth, ask your veterinarian. See also when puppies stop growing.
