Puppy food for a sensitive stomach: two labels read

Short answer
We found no definition of "sensitive stomach" in the FDA and AAFCO pages we read, so treat it as a marketing phrase and read the label. Two puppy foods sold for it, Purina Pro Plan and Hill's, both lead with salmon, but both also contain chicken-derived ingredients. Switch over about a week, and call your vet about vomiting or loose stools.
General information, not veterinary advice. If your puppy is unwell, seems in pain, or you are unsure, call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital. Read our medical disclaimer.
Key takeaways
- Loose stools or vomiting can have many causes. Ask your veterinarian before you change food.
- A salmon-first food is not chicken-free. Both foods we read list chicken or beef ingredients further down.
- Calories differ: 479 kcal per cup for the Purina food and 405 for the Hill's food.
- Hill's says to mix the new food in over a 7-day period.
Check for a medical cause first
Vomiting, loose stools and a poor appetite can come from parasites, infection, a sudden food change or something the puppy ate. A new food does not fix those. If your puppy is lethargic, has blood in the stool, will not eat or keeps vomiting, call your veterinarian. Our puppy diarrhea guide lists what to watch for.
What “sensitive stomach” means on a label
The FDA labeling page we read covers ingredient order and who regulates labels. It does not define “sensitive stomach”. Neither does AAFCO’s consumer page, which says AAFCO does not regulate, test, approve or certify pet food. The WSAVA warns that marketing words such as “holistic” and “premium” are unregulated and of little practical value for judging nutrition. We found no source that treats “sensitive stomach” any differently, so we read the parts of the label that are checkable.

Source: each maker’s own product page, read October 10, 2026. Purina and Diamond list guaranteed minimums as fed. Hill’s lists average values on a dry-matter basis, so its protein, fat and calcium are not directly comparable with the others. Prices are Purina’s own store on that date and change.
What the two labels share
Both list salmon first and both are made for growing puppies. Purina says its food is formulated to meet the AAFCO profile for all life stages, including growth of large sized dogs. Hill’s says animal feeding tests substantiate complete and balanced nutrition for growing puppies, and recommends the food for puppies up to 1 year old, including those with a sensitive stomach or skin.
Where they differ
The Purina food has more calories per cup (479 against 405, about 18 percent more, our calculation), so a cup is not interchangeable between them. Its minimum fat is 18.0%. Hill’s lists dry-matter averages of 30.7% protein and 19.8% fat.
Salmon first does not mean chicken-free
The Hill’s list continues with chicken meal, chicken fat, hydrolyzed chicken flavor and pork liver flavor. The Purina list includes beef fat, salmon meal and fish meal, with oat meal and canola meal among the top ingredients. If your veterinarian suspects a reaction to a specific ingredient, read the full list on the bag, not just the first line.
How to switch foods
Hill’s tells owners to mix increasing amounts of the new food with decreasing amounts of the old over a 7-day period. That is a reasonable pace for any change. If stools worsen, slow down and call your veterinarian.
Questions to ask the maker
The WSAVA’s guidance for choosing a food suggests asking a company whether it employs a nutritionist with a PhD in animal nutrition or board certification (ACVN or ECVCN), who formulates the recipes, what quality control it uses for ingredients and finished food, and where the food is made. It says that if a manufacturer cannot or will not provide this information, owners should be cautious about that brand. Neither maker’s product page answers all of these, so an email to the company is a reasonable step if your puppy has had trouble with a food.
Price
On Purina’s own store on October 10, 2026, the sensitive puppy food was $5.00 per pound for a 4 lb bag and $3.12 per pound for a 24 lb bag. We did not find a price on Hill’s page.
What we are not saying
We are not saying either food will settle a puppy’s stomach. We read the labels and did not feed them to dogs. A prescription diet, if one is needed, comes from your veterinarian. Read how we research.
Frequently asked questions
Is grain-free better for a sensitive stomach?
No source we read says so. The FDA has investigated a possible link between some diets, many grain-free, and dilated cardiomyopathy and has not reached a final conclusion (page last updated December 23, 2022). It advises working with your veterinarian before changing your pet's diet.
When should I call the vet?
Call if your puppy is lethargic, vomiting repeatedly, has blood in the stool, will not eat or seems in pain. Puppies can get dehydrated quickly.
Can I mix a sensitive food with my puppy's current food?
Yes, that is how Hill's says to switch: increase the new food and decrease the old over a 7-day period.
