Dog age calculator
By Solayman Rumon, editor, not a veterinarianUpdated How we research this
Short answer
Using a 2020 formula from University of California San Diego researchers, a one-year-old dog is about 31 in human years, a two-year-old about 42 and a four-year-old about 53. The formula is human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It was built from 104 Labrador retrievers, so other breeds may age differently.
Key takeaways
- The formula is human age = 16 times the natural logarithm of dog age in years, plus 31.
- Dogs age quickly when young and more slowly later, so “multiply by seven” does not fit the data.
- The clock was built from one breed, the Labrador retriever. Breeds that live longer or shorter may map differently.
- The sources do not describe the formula for dogs under one year, so this calculator shows no number below one year.
How do you convert dog years to human years?
Take the natural logarithm of the dog’s age in years, multiply by 16, then add 31.
human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31
Worked example, calculated by us: a dog aged 4 has ln(4) = 1.386, so 16 × 1.386 + 31 = 53.2, or about 53.
| Dog’s age | Human-age equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 year | 31 |
| 2 years | 42 |
| 3 years | 49 |
| 4 years | 53 |
| 5 years | 57 |
| 7 years | 62 |
| 10 years | 68 |
| 12 years | 71 |
| 15 years | 74 |
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. The researchers found a nonlinear relationship: dogs age fast early in life and more slowly later, which a straight “times seven” rule cannot show. ScienceAlert and BBC Science Focus both reported this when the study appeared.
How was the formula made?
Tina Wang and Trey Ideker at the University of California San Diego studied DNA methylation, a chemical marking that changes as animals age. They measured it in 104 Labrador retrievers across a 16-year age span and compared the pattern with published human and mouse data. The result was published in Cell Systems in 2020.
Does breed matter?
Probably. The researchers note that the clock was developed with one breed and that some breeds live longer than others. Dr. Ideker has said he expects the clock to apply to other breeds, but that is his prediction, not a tested result.
What about puppies under one year?
The sources we read do not describe the formula for dogs under one year, so we show no number. The study did report one match: seven weeks in a dog lined up with about nine months in a human, the time when baby teeth come in. For feeding and weight, use the puppy feeding calculator and the puppy growth chart instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is a one-year-old dog really like a 31-year-old person?
By this formula, yes: 16 times ln(1) plus 31 is 31. It is an estimate based on DNA methylation in Labrador retrievers, not a measure of behavior or health.
Why does the calculator need dogs to be one year or older?
The sources we read do not describe the formula for dogs under one year, so we do not show a number.
Does it work for small and giant breeds?
It was built from Labradors. The researchers note that some breeds live longer than others, so treat results for other breeds as rough.
Can this tell me when my dog is a senior?
No. It converts age to a human-age equivalent. Ask your veterinarian about your dog’s life stage.
